The Lantern Under the Bed
A strange glow beneath Asha’s bed becomes a lesson in checking before imagining.

Read together at your own pace. Pausing, rereading, or stopping is always okay.
A pale green glow appeared beneath Asha’s bed. It could be a cave, a creature, or a secret train station. Each idea grew larger because Asha stayed beneath the blanket and could not see the whole thing.
She called Grandma, who turned on the bedside lamp. Together they checked from a comfortable distance. The glow came from Asha’s toy camping lantern, switched on beneath a fallen sweater.
They moved the lantern to the shelf and checked that nothing was hot or damaged. Grandma did not laugh at Asha’s guesses. “A shadow gives imagination very little information,” she said.
When the room became dark again, Asha knew what was under the bed: one box, two slippers, and no secret station tonight. She let imagination save its train for tomorrow’s drawing.

In daylight with an adult, identify three ordinary objects that make surprising shadows. Never investigate electrical heat or damage without an adult.
Activities are designed for shared use. An adult should choose materials and supervision appropriate to the child.
