The Boat of Five Breaths
When sleep feels far away, Idris imagines a paper boat moving with five gentle breaths.

Read together at your own pace. Pausing, rereading, or stopping is always okay.
Idris lay still, but his thoughts ran laps. Tomorrow had a spelling check, a new lunch table, and a library book he must remember. Dad did not tell the thoughts to vanish. He helped Idris place them on an imaginary paper boat.
With the first gentle breath, the boat left shore. With the second, it passed a reed. The third carried it beneath a round moon. The fourth made one quiet ripple. The fifth brought it to a safe sandy bank.
A worry jumped back onto the boat, so Idris sailed five breaths again. The journey was not a test he could fail. It was simply something calm to follow while his body rested.
Before the third voyage ended, the spelling words loosened their grip. Morning would still bring the check and the lunch table. Night only asked Idris to rest before meeting them.
Story workshop
Notice, talk, and play
Words to notice
- imaginary
- existing in the mind rather than physically
- ripple
- a small wave on water
- voyage
- a journey, especially over water
Talk about the story
- What thoughts kept Idris awake?
- What happened on each breath?
- Why was the breathing journey not a test?
Try it together
With a trusted adult, trace five slow waves on paper while breathing comfortably. Stop if any breathing exercise feels uncomfortable.
Activities are designed for shared use. An adult should choose materials and supervision appropriate to the child.
