Friends Who Figure It Out

Maria’s Half-Finished Song

Maria asks for help with a song and discovers the difference between judging an idea and helping it grow.

01

Maria played Devon a song she had written. The first verse bounced; the chorus soared. Then the melody stopped in the middle of a line. “Is it good?” she asked, hoping for a simple yes.

02

Devon liked it, but “good” would not finish the missing line. He asked what feeling Maria wanted there. “Like opening a window,” she said. Devon tapped a rising rhythm and suggested holding the last note longer.

03

Maria tried the idea, changed two notes, and found a melody that sounded like fresh air to her. She thanked Devon for helping without taking over. Devon thanked her for explaining what the song needed.

04

At music club, Maria introduced it as a song they had helped grow together. Useful feedback, she learned, was not a stamp marked good or bad. It was a flashlight pointed toward the next choice.

Try it together

Show a drawing or idea to someone and ask one specific question: “Which part is clearest?” or “Where could I add more detail?”

Activities are designed for shared use. An adult should choose materials and supervision appropriate to the child.
