Pepper and the Last Blue Tile

Two friends both need the last blue tile, so they look for the reasons behind their plans.

Two children building a colorful tile town with one blue tile between them.

Read together at your own pace. Pausing, rereading, or stopping is always okay.

Illustrated scene 1 from Pepper and the Last Blue Tile.01

Pepper was building a river through the block town. Sol was building a blue roof for the tiny clinic. Between them lay the last blue tile. Both hands reached it at the same moment.

Illustrated scene 2 from Pepper and the Last Blue Tile.02

“I need it,” said Pepper. “So do I,” said Sol. They tried taking turns with the tile, but each building fell apart whenever the tile moved. Then Pepper asked, “What job does the blue do in your idea?”

Illustrated scene 3 from Pepper and the Last Blue Tile.03

Sol needed a roof, but it did not truly need to be blue. Pepper’s river did. They traded: Pepper used the blue tile, and Sol chose two strong red pieces for the roof. Sol added a blue paper sign so the clinic still matched his plan.

Illustrated scene 4 from Pepper and the Last Blue Tile.04

They had not divided one tile into impossible halves. They had listened for what mattered most. When the town was finished, the river curved past a bright red clinic with the clearest blue sign on the street.

Talk about the story

  1. Why did taking turns not solve the problem?
  2. What question helped the friends?
  3. How was the final solution fair?

Try it together

Choose two pretend builders who want the same object. List what each person needs it to do, then invent two fair solutions.

Activities are designed for shared use. An adult should choose materials and supervision appropriate to the child.
