The Kite That Came Down
Suri’s handmade kite falls during the festival, but the landing reveals what to change.

Read together at your own pace. Pausing, rereading, or stopping is always okay.
Suri painted her kite with a sunrise and carried it to the hill festival. For three seconds it climbed beautifully. Then it spun, folded, and slid across the grass while other kites sailed overhead.
Disappointment burned behind Suri’s eyes. She wanted to crumple the kite before anyone could see it fail again. Her neighbor Mateo pointed to the short tail. “It turns whenever the wind pushes this side,” he observed.
They tied on a longer ribbon tail and repaired one bent stick. Suri waited for a steady breeze instead of running at the first gust. The kite rose, dipped, and then balanced above them like a small painted window.
Suri’s second flight was not the same as pretending the first had never happened. The grass stain remained on one corner. She liked it there. It marked the place where disappointment had turned into useful information.
Story workshop
Notice, talk, and play
Words to notice
- festival

Talk about the story
- What went wrong during the first flight?
- Which two changes did Suri make?
- Why did she keep the grass stain?
Try it together
Fold a paper glider with an adult. Make one test flight, change only one feature, and compare the two flights.
Activities are designed for shared use. An adult should choose materials and supervision appropriate to the child.
